Useful Tips
Why do I need travel insurance? Isn't my existing health insurance enough?
While your existing local health insurance provides a crucial safety net in Singapore, it is generally not sufficient to cover the unforeseen you might potentially face when travelling overseas. Travel insurance, particularly our Travel Safe, fills these gaps by covering:
- Overseas Emergency Medical Costs: High medical costs abroad, plus unlimited emergency evacuation and repatriation, which standard health plans typically exclude. Travel Safe provides extensive coverage for Overseas Medical & Accidental Dental Expenses (up to S$600,000) and, crucially, Unlimited Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation for getting you home safely in the event if you are critically ill, which is always excluded from standard health insurance plans.
- Travel Inconveniences: Your health insurance will not cover the financial losses resulting from unforeseen travel issues. Travel Safe covers costs for Travel Cancellation (up to S$15,000), Travel Delay (S$100 for every 6 hours of delay), lost or delayed baggage, and even the insolvency of your travel agent.
- Personal Property Protection:Travel insurance protects your belongings. Our plan includes coverage for Baggage and Personal Effects (up to S$8,000), which is vital for covering lost or stolen luggage and valuables during your trip.
In short, travel insurance protects not just your health, but your trip, finances, and peace of mind while overseas.
What does travel insurance cover?
Our comprehensive Travel Safe insurance plan is designed to protect you against a wide spectrum of risks, covering major categories of loss or inconvenience that can occur before, during, or after your trip.
Key coverage areas and specific benefits include:
- Medical & Emergency: This covers overseas and post trip hospital stays, surgeries, doctor’s visits, and the cost of bringing you back to Singapore for treatment if necessary.
- Travel Inconvenience: Protects your financial investment if your trip is unexpectedly cut short or cancelled, or if your flight is significantly delayed.
- Property & Belongings: Compensates you if your luggage is lost, damaged, or delayed, including specific limits for valuable items and cash.
- Accidental Protection: Benefits for accidental death and permanent disablement while travelling.
- COVID-19 Specific: Provides defined benefits specific to contracting the COVID-19 virus before or during your journey.
Premiums are generally affordable, especially for short trips or nearby destinations, making the plan suitable for both quick getaways and longer travels.
For a full breakdown of coverage and limits, you can read more in the detailed brochure.
How much does travel insurance typically cost?
- Plan Type: Single trip vs annual multi-trip (Annual plans offer long-term savings for frequent travellers).
- Coverage Tier: Choosing the Economy, Business, or First Plan will adjust the coverage limits and the premium paid.
- Trip Duration: Longer trips may have slightly higher premiums.
Do I need to declare my pre-existing medical conditions (PEC)?
For the China Taiping Singapore Travel Safe plan, like most standard travel insurance policies, you do not need to declare your pre-existing medical conditions (PEC) because the plan is designed to cover only new, sudden, and unforeseen illnesses or injuries that arise during your covered trip.
- What is Covered: The policy provides comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies that are not related to any PEC you may have.
- What is Not Covered: Generally, claims for medical expenses arising directly or indirectly from any illness, disease, or physical condition that existed, was diagnosed, or received treatment prior to the purchase of your policy are excluded from coverage.
It is crucial that you carefully review the definition of “Pre-Existing Medical Condition” in the Policy Wording to understand your specific coverage limits and exclusions.
Can Travel Safe cover me if I contract COVID-19 before or during my trip?
Yes, Travel Safe provides coverage specifically for COVID-19, offering a crucial safety net for both pre-trip issues and incidents that happen while you are overseas.
Under the COVID-19 Benefits section, you are covered for:
- Overseas Medical Expenses: Up to S$100,000 for necessary medical treatments if you contract the virus while overseas.
- Emergency Medical Evacuation: Up to S$100,000 to cover the costs of emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if critically necessary.
- Trip Postponement, Curtailment, or Cancellation: Up to S$2,000 for costs if you or a travel companion is diagnosed with COVID-19 just before the trip, forcing you to cancel, shorten, or postpone.
- Quarantine Allowance: Cash payouts are included for both overseas and Singapore quarantine periods.
These coverages ensure you receive the financial support and medical assistance you need related to COVID-19.
What is Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage?
Emergency Medical Evacuation covers the cost of medically supervised transport to the nearest suitable medical facility when local treatment is inadequate or back to Singapore after the medical treatment overseas. Our Travel Safe provides unlimited coverage, ensuring you receive the care you deserve without worrying about evacuation costs.
When should I purchase my travel insurance?
You should purchase travel insurance not less than 2 months before your trip, in case of unforeseen circumstances that prevent you from travelling. Buying early activates pre-departure benefits. For instance, our Travel Safe covers trip cancellation, curtailment, or postponement, protecting your non-refundable expenses or additional expenses incurred if unforeseen events occur before or during your trip, safeguarding your financial investment from the start.
Should I choose a single-trip or an annual multi-trip policy?
The choice between a single-trip and an annual multi-trip policy with Travel Safe depends entirely on how often you travel throughout the year.
Annual Multi-Trip Plan
This is the most cost-effective option for frequent travellers. If you take three or more trips in a year, you will enjoy significant cost savings compared to buying three separate single-trip policies.
Do note that the duration of each individual trip under the annual plan must not exceed 90 days.
Single-Trip Plan
This is ideal if you:
- travel infrequently (once or twice a year).
- are planning one exceptionally long trip, as our single-trip plan offers coverage for trips up to a maximum duration of 182 days (approximately 6 months).
If your travel is frequent but short, the annual plan offers superior value and convenience.
Can I buy insurance after I've already left for my trip?
No, you must buy travel insurance before you leave for your trip.
Purchasing your Travel Safe plan soon after booking your first flights or accommodation ensures that you are protected for pre-departure cancellation and comprehensive protection from the very start of your travel arrangements.
How long does the coverage last?
- Single Trip Plan:Covers one trip of up to 182 days, starting from policy purchase (for pre-departure benefits) until you return to Singapore.
- Annual Trip Plan: Provides one year of coverage for multiple trips, with each trip typically limited to 90 days.
Can I extend my policy if my trip is delayed or I decide to stay longer?
Yes, China Taiping Singapore provides provisions for extending your policy, particularly under specific circumstances.
- Involuntary Extension (Delayed Return)
If your return to Singapore is unintentionally delayed due to a covered event, such as hospitalisation, compulsory quarantine, or a public transport delay not caused by you, your policy will automatically be extended for the applicable duration specified for that event – up to 30 days for hospitalisation or compulsory quarantine, or up to 2 days for public transport delays. There will be no additional charges incurred, until you are able to safely return.
- Voluntary Extension (Deciding to Stay Longer)
If you decide to voluntarily stay longer (not due to an insured event), you must contact China Taiping Singapore before your original policy expiration date. An extension may be granted upon approval and payment of an additional premium, provided the total length of your trip does not exceed the maximum allowable duration (182 days for a single trip plan).
We advise contacting our customer service hotline as soon as you know you need a voluntary extension to ensure continuous coverage.
What reasons for trip cancellation are covered?
Travel Safe provides financial compensation for non-refundable travel and accommodation expenses if you must cancel your trip due to a range of severe and unexpected events that occur after you purchase your policy. Covered reasons for trip cancellation typically include:
- Severe Illness or Injury: You, your travel companion, or an immediate family member suffers a sudden, serious illness or injury.
- Death: The unfortunate death of you, your travel companion, or an immediate family member.
- Unforeseen Events:Unexpected events like major natural disasters at your planned destination, civil unrest, or acts of terrorism that make travel unsafe.
- Other Circumstances: Including being called for jury service or mandatory quarantine (non-COVID related).
The policy is designed to protect your financial investment when serious circumstances beyond your control prevent you from travelling.
If my flight is delayed, will I be reimbursed for meals and accommodation?
Yes. Travel Safe provides a Travel Delay cash benefit of S$100 for every full 6 hours of delay when you are overseas, up to the sum insured amount of the plan you purchased, and up to maximum $100 for delay of at least 6 hours when you are in Singapore. This payout can be used for meals or accommodation, with no receipts required – only proof of delay.
Am I covered if my baggage is lost, damaged, or delayed by the airline?
Yes, our Travel Safe offers robust coverage for baggage issues, whether your luggage is lost, physically damaged, or delayed in transit by the carrier. It provides two distinct benefits:
- Baggage & Personal Effects (Loss/Damage):You are covered for the total loss or physical damage to your baggage and personal items (including valuables) up to S$8,000.
- Baggage Delay:If your luggage is delayed and does not arrive with you, you are entitled to compensation of S$200 for every 6 hours of delay (up to a maximum of S$2,000) if the delay occurs whilst overseas or a maximum sum of S$200 if the delay is at least 6 hours whilst in Singapore. This payout is intended to cover any unexpected expenses incurred while you wait for your bags to arrive.
You must obtain written proof from the Public Transport provider stating the details of your baggage delay, as this is a key document required for your claim.
Is my expensive camera equipment or laptop covered?
Yes, your valuable items, including expensive camera equipment and laptops, are covered under the Baggage & Personal Effects benefit of Travel Safe.
- High Combined Limit: Our plan offers a high overall combined limit for your entire set of belongings, including valuables and mobile devices (up to S$8,000).
- Specific Sub-Limits Apply: While the overall limit is high, please be aware that the actual Policy wording will contain specific sub-limits (e.g., a maximum dollar amount) that apply per single item, per set, or for valuables like cameras, jewellery, or laptops.
What is the process for filing a claim?
Filing a claim with China Taiping Singapore is designed to be as simple as possible. The process involves three essential steps:
Step 1: Contact Us Immediately – For emergency situations (e.g., medical evacuation or severe illness), immediately call our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance hotline so we can coordinate your care and manage the logistics. For non-emergencies, start by downloading the appropriate claim form from our website.
Step 2: Gather Necessary Documentation – Collect all required supporting documents related to your claim (police reports, official airline delay statements, original receipts, etc.).
Step 3: Submit Your Claim – Complete and sign the Original Completed Claim Form and submit it along with all the supporting evidence to our claims department within the required time limit. Following these steps and providing accurate, complete documentation ensures the fastest possible processing time for your claim.
What documents do I need to keep to make a successful claim?
To ensure the prompt and successful processing of your Travel Safe claim, you must keep all relevant original documents, as these are the proof required to validate the incident and your coverage.
For general claims, keep these readily accessible, as they prove you were covered for the dates and destination of the incident:
- Original Completed Claim Form: Fully filled out and personally signed.
- Policy Schedule/Certificate of Insurance: Essential proof that validates your active coverage.
- Original Air Tickets and Boarding Passes:Confirms your travel bookings.
- Copy of Passport: Showing your personal details and all immigration stamps confirming the duration of your trip (departure and return dates).
- Detailed Travel Itinerary (if any):A clear breakdown of your planned journey dates and destinations.
For specific claims:
- Medical Claims: Original medical reports, hospital bills, and itemised receipts.
- Delay Claims: Official written confirmation from the airline or transport provider stating the cause and duration of the delay.
- Loss/Theft Claims: Original police reports filed locally at the scene of the incident.
Is there a time limit for submitting a claim after an incident?
Yes. Claims must generally be submitted within 30 days of the incident or within 30 days of your return to Singapore. For pre-trip claims (such as trip cancellation), the 30-day period starts from when you first became aware you needed to cancel. We recommend notifying us as soon as possible after any incident.
We recommend checking the full policy wordings for the specific sub-limits to ensure that the coverage meets the value of your most expensive items.
