Why is domestic helper insurance mandatory and important?

When you employ a domestic helper, you are responsible for her proper accommodation, safe working environment and medical needs. This includes bearing the full cost of her medical care should she requires treatment, including hospitalization.

Domestic helper insurance ensures comprehensive coverage during her employment. It is compulsory for employers of domestic helpers to purchase a Personal Accident insurance for them before they can be employed. The minimum sum insured is S$60,000. Any compensation payable must be made to them or their beneficiaries.

When should I get the domestic helper insurance plan?

It might take up to three business days to successfully forward the security bond detail to the Ministry of Manpower. Hence, it is recommended to get the domestic helper insurance plan at least three business days before your domestic helper arrives in Singapore. Here are the policy start dates to consider for new, renewal and transferred maids:

New maids : The policy starts on the day that your maid arrives in Singapore.
Maids renewing their work permits : The policy starts one day after their present work permit expires.
Transferred maids : The policy starts on or before the date you file for a Ministry of Manpower transfer.

Will the insurance plan protect my domestic helper when she returns to her home country during the holidays?

Your domestic helper will only be covered from accidental permanent disablement and death during her time in her home country. All other coverage and benefits will be put on hold until she returns back to work in Singapore, provided her work pass is not cancelled.

Why does the insurance plan cover 26 months rather than 24 months?

The additional two months of coverage (non-chargeable) is required by Ministry of Manpower to cover your domestic helper for two months after her work visa expires, in case of a delay in her repatriation.

What is the Bond Protector add-on, and is it necessary?

The Bond Protector is an optional add-on in Singapore domestic helper insurance that reimburses the employer for the loss of the $5,000 Security Bond if it’s forfeited due to the helper’s fault. This benefit typically comes with an excess of S$200, meaning the employer bears the first $200 of the claim. While it is not mandatory, the Bond Protector provides additional financial protection and peace of mind, especially in unforeseen situations that could lead to bond forfeiture. Employers who want to safeguard themselves against such risks may find this add-on worthwhile.
